About Vaginal Rejuvenation

There are many reasons as to why someone would consider undergoing a vaginal rejuvenation treatment. As patients age, their bodies go through a process called urogenital aging, where many physical and hormonal changes can affect their functionality and the appearance of the urinary and genital systems. (1) This can cause many concerns such as vaginal dryness, irritation, recurrent infections, and more, making vaginal rejuvenation a valuable option for women interested in restoring their function and sensation.

Post-Pregnancy Effects

Many women choose to undergo a vaginal rejuvenation treatment to address physical changes that may have occurred during pregnancy. Individuals often experience effects such as vaginal laxity, or looseness, decreased sexual sensation, as well as a weakened pelvic floor—all of which can affect one’s overall quality of life and daily comfort.

Menopause

As women grow older, their ovaries slowly stop producing the hormones progesterone and estrogen, leading to the cessation of periods for at least 12 months. This marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years, with women spending approximately 40% of their lives in the postmenopausal stage. (2) When menopause or perimenopause is occurring, the tissue in the vaginal canal slowly gets thinner and dryer due to a lack of estrogen, often leading to persistent discomfort. There are many symptoms of menopause, including but not exclusive to the following:

  • Irregular Periods
  • Hot Flashes
  • Night Sweats
  • Vaginal Dryness
  • Feelings of Burning
  • Urinary Incontinence

Vaginal Atrophy

Vaginal atrophy is a common condition where one’s vaginal lining starts to become drier and thinner, resulting in symptoms including itching, burning, pain during sexual activity, and more. (3) Vaginal atrophy can occur during either perimenopause or menopause and is primarily caused by a lack of estrogen production. An estimated 10% to 50% of all postmenopausal women develop vaginal atrophy, however, this number may be higher than reported. (4) While vaginal atrophy is not life-threatening, it can have a significant negative impact on one’s quality of life.

Suitable Candidates

Suitable candidates for vaginal rejuvenation include women interested in enhancing their sexual wellness, daily comfort, and overall functionality. Women experiencing discomfort due to concerns such as vaginal laxity or dryness are highly recommended for this treatment, in addition to those experiencing symptoms of urinary incontinence.

All candidates interested in our vaginal rejuvenation treatments should be in good overall health, free from any underlying medical conditions that may impair healing. Realistic expectations should also be held regarding what our treatments can accomplish. Patients should be non-smokers or willing to quit until fully healed. Dr. Guevara-Channell will determine each patient’s candidacy during their personal consultation.

Personal Consultation

Each patient is asked to attend a personal consultation with Dr. Guevara-Channell before starting their vaginal rejuvenation treatment. This consultation is not only a chance for our team to get to know each patient more personally, but also so that our team can recommend the best treatment to help them achieve their desired results. Dr. Guevara-Channell will first ask questions about any current medications, patient medical history, goals, and concerns. An examination may also be performed to evaluate the patient’s physical anatomy.

From there, we will craft each patient’s treatment plan, customizing certain aspects to help each patient achieve their goals. Any necessary preparation and recovery instructions will be provided, as well as an all-inclusive quote. Patients are encouraged to prepare and ask questions, as this consultation is time dedicated to them and their specific procedure.

To schedule your personal consultation at our Rancho Cucamonga office, please call our office at (909) 483-1236 or submit our online contact form.

Preparation

We will provide each patient with a set of preparation instructions during their consultation. Instructions may vary depending on the type of treatment being performed and the patient’s lifestyle. It is important to follow each instruction for the smoothest recovery and best possible results. Generally speaking, patients may be asked to discontinue certain medications or supplements with blood-thinning properties. The use of tampons, as well as sexual activity, should be discontinued several days in advance. Additionally, those who smoke should cease their nicotine use several weeks before their appointment, refraining until fully healed.

Treatment Options

We offer a variety of procedures to help each woman revitalize the functionality, comfort, and aesthetics of their vaginal area. We offer bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, platelet-rich plasma injections, and the MonaLisa Touch to help each woman address their concerns.

BHRT Procedure

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is a type of replacement therapy that utilizes plant-based hormones identical to the ones produced in the body to help alleviate and address symptoms of menopause. The hormones are structurally identical to progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone, so they are processed similarly by the body.

Dr. Guevara-Channell will prescribe each patient a type of hormone replacement therapy, such as transdermal patches, topical creams, or oral tablets, depending on each patient’s needs. BHRT is a self-administered treatment, meaning each patient will be instructed on how and when their medication is taken, as opposed to returning to our office for treatment.

PRP Procedure

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrated serum of plasma derived from a sample of each patient’s blood. PRP is rich in growth factors and promotes cell regeneration and synthesis, and can be used to address a variety of concerns such as vaginal health, injury, hair restoration, and more.

Dr. Guevara-Channell will first draw a sample of blood, similar to a regular doctor’s visit. The sample will then be processed through a centrifuge to help separate the plasma from other cellular matter. The PRP is then injected into various areas of the vagina, including the vaginal wall and clitoral area, to help stimulate blood flow, restore natural lubrication, and enhance sensitivity and stimulation.

MonaLisa Touch Procedure

MonaLisa Touch is a type of CO2 fractional laser that can help address changes and concerns caused by hormonal imbalances and menopause. This treatment utilizes advanced technology to create thousands of micropunctures in the vaginal canal, similar to microneedling, to help stimulate the body’s natural healing process. Once stimulated, the body will start to produce collagen, which will then improve the circulation, elasticity, quality, and thickness of the vaginal tissues and canal. The enhanced blood flow can help alleviate vaginal dryness, while the thickened tissue can prevent tearing and any further atrophy.

Additionally, MonaLisa Touch can help restore and maintain the pH balance of the vagina, avoiding the development of various vaginal or urinary tract infections.

Recovery

The recovery process will vary from patient to patient depending on the type of treatment being performed. As there is no downtime associated with any of our vaginal rejuvenation treatments, patients will be able to return to their daily routines immediately. Swelling, light redness, or tenderness may be experienced at the treatment site, as well as light bleeding or spotting. These effects are temporary and often subside within 1-3 days after the appointment, but any discomfort can be managed through the use of medications. Sexual activity and tampon use should also be avoided for several days after being treated. Any further instructions will be provided by Dr. Guevara-Channell during each patient’s consultation.

Results

The results of each patient’s vaginal rejuvenation treatment can start to be experienced several weeks after the initial appointment, as collagen is continuously produced by their body. After several weeks, patients will be able to enjoy an improvement in their sexual satisfaction and sensation, self-lubrication, and daily comfort. Many women also report an improvement in their self-esteem, potentially leading to an enhanced quality of life. Our vaginal rejuvenation treatments are all long-lasting, with patients experiencing their results for many months.
