About Liquid Facelifts

While traditional facelifts have long been popular, advancements in medical technology have paved the way for alternatives that incorporate various injections of dermal fillers and/or neuromodulators. Dermal fillers are designed to revitalize the skin itself and prompt it to resolve wrinkles and fine lines through its volumizing abilities and prompting the production of connective proteins like collagen and elastin. Neuromodulators target the facial muscles and relax the overlying skin. To get an idea of which treatments may work best for you consider the various formulations of each:

Juvéderm and Restylane

Juvéderm and Restylane, made of hyaluronic acid, are arguably the most popular since they contain an all-natural compound already found in the body. Hyaluronic acid is found in between the joints, facilitating smoother movement in between cartilage. HA also functions as a substance that attracts and keeps your skin hydrated and firm. (1) In the second layer of your skin, the dermis, HA filler is able to bind to your existing connective fibers made of collagen and elastin- essential proteins for your skin’s youthfulness and elasticity. This, alongside stimulating the amount of the proteins within your skin, creates volumizing effects for facial tissue. Depending on your metabolism and the type of HA filler you apply for your liquid facelift, results could last 18 months to 1 year. Both Juvéderm and Restylane have multiple formulations designed to correct very specific cosmetic issues. Among those that they treat are nasolabial folds, tear troughs, facial hollowness, dark circles, thin lips, lip lines, and more severe wrinkling.

Sculptra

Fillers with poly-l lactic acid (PLLA) cause a controlled inflammation within the skin that results in the creation of new collagen and elastin. As the effects of this filler begin to fade away, it chemically breaks down into carbon dioxide and water, making it easy for the body to absorb. As a poly-l lactic acid filler, Sculptra lasts roughly 2 years– much longer than its HA counterparts. (2) It is capable of treating more pronounced signs of aging such as sagging skin, and it is also suitable for the body.

Radiesse

Radiesse is a filler that contains calcium hydroxyapatite, a naturally occurring mineral that is encapsulated in carboxymethylcellulose gel formed from plant cellulose. Radiesse works slowly within the skin, allowing rejuvenating effects over a long period of time. It has been shown to increase the rate of collagen production over the course of 9 months after the initial treatment. (3) Radiesse is specifically designed to treat moderate to severe wrinkles and lines.

Botox and Dysport

Botox and Dysport are neuromodulators that contain botulinum toxin, a protein that comes from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. In small amounts, it safely and temporarily blocks acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter responsible for muscle contraction. Neuromodulators are capable of preventing the formation of static wrinkles, or lines that form permanently from the overuse of facial expressions- making it an effective preventative treatment. While Botox lasts approximately 3 to 4 months, Dysport can last up to 5 months.

Candidates for a Liquid Facelift

The ideal candidate for a liquid facelift should be someone who is unhappy with their facial wrinkles, sagging skin, and/or loss of youthful volume in their cheeks or chin. Patients should be in good health with no underlying conditions that could affect their healing processes. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should refrain from dermal fillers and neuromodulators. Patients should have realistic expectations and desire natural-looking results.

Preparation

Prior to a customizable liquid facelift, Dr. Guevara-Channell requires that her patients prepare accordingly. Before receiving any injections, you should avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements to prevent the likelihood of unwanted bleeding or bruising during the procedure. You should also quit smoking, other nicotine products, and alcohol for a couple of weeks in order to get your blood circulation working at its best. The compounds in these products can slow down your recovery and inhibit the effect of fillers or neuromodulators.

You should be sure to skip out on any intense skin treatments in the days before your procedure; this includes depilatory creams, bleaching, waxing, or the use of topical retinoids. Immediately before your procedure, we recommend applying an ice pack to your treatment areas to help constrict blood vessels and minimize bruising.

Procedure

While every liquid facelift is performed differently, your injector will go through many of the same steps for every procedure. First, they will completely cleanse your face with alcohol to prevent infection. If you are concerned about the discomfort, they will apply a numbing cream to various areas of your face; this cream typically takes about 45 minutes to provide full numbing effects.

Your injector will administer dermal fillers to your facial tissue and massage the area to ensure it spreads evenly. If Botox and Dysport are used, your injector will ask you to make facial expressions to identify and mark the locations of various facial muscles. With neuromodulator injections, they are careful to not spread it around; these injections are designed to precisely target specific muscles to produce a specific outcome. Even without the use of numbing cream, a liquid facelift is fairly comfortable due to how thin the needles are and how each medication is mixed with lidocaine, an anesthetic. Once the session is over, you will be able to enjoy the anti-aging effects of a facelift without the incisions.

Aftercare and Results

Mild bruising and swelling are common immediately after a liquid facelift, but in general, the final results will be apparent right away. Depending on the filler you receive, some results may take time to settle in and take effect. If you receive Botox or Dysport injections, you should keep your head elevated for a few hours so that it won’t migrate to other facial muscles and cause a different result.

For the first 2 days, you should avoid working out, excessive sweating, or any environment with extreme heat or cold. You should also avoid touching your face as much as possible. This will allow your filler or neuromodulator to absorb into your skin or facial muscles effectively. Depending on your specific injections of choice and your metabolism, the longevity of your results may vary. Fillers tend to last 1 to 2 years on average, while Botox and Dysport last 3 to 5 months.

FAQ

Can the results of a liquid facelift be reversed?

Hyaluronic acid injections can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, reversing the effects. Botox and Dysport, however, cannot be reversed; patients will have to wait until the effects naturally wear off.

Can a liquid facelift fix sagging skin?

While a liquid facelift can’t fix sagging, it can provide volume around the sagging areas to help reduce its appearance.

Is a liquid facelift painful?

The dermal filler and neuromodulators used in a liquid facelift cause minimal discomfort for most patients. People looking to revitalize their facial appearance often choose a liquid facelift since there is no risk of scars, it utilizes biodegradable ingredients, and there is no anesthesia required.
