About CO2 Lasers

Your skin undergoes several changes throughout the course of your life, with one of the biggest being a loss of collagen. This is a protein that provides essential support and structure to your skin, and without it, your skin can start to develop wrinkles, begin to sag, and take on a more aged appearance overall. To address these issues, CO2 lasers use laser energy to stimulate your body’s natural regenerative properties and induce the production of new collagen, allowing you to target them easily and effectively.

About the DEKA SmartXide

The DEKA SmartXide system is an advanced CO2 fractional laser that can rejuvenate the skin. (1) It emits pulses of laser energy in a grid-like pattern that create controlled microscopic wounds on the skin’s surface to stimulate the process of neocollagenesis. Treatment is customizable to your needs, and it additionally features SmartStack technology, which emits between 1 and 5 pulses to the same spot to increase penetration depth.

Benefits

CO2 lasers offer numerous benefits, including:

  • Customizable Solutions: Your laser expert can adjust the strength of your treatment, the depth of the laser pulses, and the spacing of the laser pulses,
  • Lasting Results: Once the new collagen has fully developed, you will be able to enjoy your results for over a year. This is much longer than many other skin rejuvenation treatments on the market.
  • Minimal Recovery Time: You may return to most of your routine immediately after your appointment concludes.
  • Wide Application: CO2 lasers can treat several different skin conditions and concerns at once, allowing you to transform your skin with ease.
  • Reduced Texturing: This treatment can correct uneven texturing and facial scars to achieve a smoother look and feel.
  • Softened Signs of Aging: This treatment can reduce photoaging, fine lines, and wrinkles, allowing you to restore a more youthful-looking appearance overall.
  • More Even Skin: CO2 lasers can address pigmentation irregularities and uneven skin toning, resulting in a more radiant and uniform complexion.

Candidates

You may benefit from CO2 lasering if you are interested in resurfacing your skin to elevate its texture or appearance. This treatment is especially effective when correcting:

  • Signs of photoaging
  • Facial scars (including acne, trauma, or surgical scars)
  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Pigmentation irregularities
  • Uneven texturing
  • Uneven skin toning (2)

To undergo this treatment, you should be in good general health without underlying skin concerns or active infections in the treatment area. You should also maintain realistic expectations regarding your results. Dr. Guevara-Channell or another laser expert will assess your candidacy during your personal consultation.

Personal Consultation

During your personal consultation, Dr. Guevara-Channell or another skin specialist will meet with you individually to learn more about how they can help you. They will review your medical history, including any previous skin treatments you have undergone. They will discuss your aesthetic concerns and the regions you wish to target. They will also perform a thorough physical examination to assess your skin’s condition, type, and quality.

With this information, they determine whether CO2 lasering is right for you and figure out the best approach for your needs. They will decide what laser settings to use and will explain each aspect of your treatment plan. After this point, you may schedule your appointment if you feel ready to.

Preparation

With your treatment plan finalized, you will receive a set or preparatory guidelines. These instructions may vary, but they typically include:

  • Refraining from Tanning: Avoid the use of tanning products or tanning beds in the weeks before your laser procedure.
  • Protecting Your Skin: Wear a minimum of SPF 30 sunscreen every day and shield your skin from direct or unprotected sun exposure.
  • Avoid Certain Medications: Under the proper medical guidance, discontinue using blood-thinning or anti-inflammatory medications before your procedure.
  • Alter Your Routine: Augment your skincare routine to avoid using harsh or irritating products. These include exfoliants or products that feature minocycline, doxycycline, retinoids, and retinols.
  • Come Prepared: Arrive at your appointment on time with freshly cleansed skin.

Procedure

After you arrive for your appointment, your laser expert will lead you to a private treatment room where you will be seated. They will cleanse your skin to remove any residual oils or particles before applying a topical numbing cream to keep you comfortable.

Once it has taken effect, your laser expert will pass the SmartXide handpiece over the treatment area. The device will emit short pulses of controlled laser energy into your skin to create microchannels on its surface. Your practitioner will continue to repeat this motion until uniformly treating the target areas. They will then apply a soothing serum or ointment to the region to calm your skin and reduce inflammation.

Recovery

After your CO2 laser treatment, you can expect your skin to take 1 to 2 weeks to heal. You may experience some initial redness, warmth, and tenderness around the treated regions, as well as peeling, scabbing, or flaking. These effects will subside on their own with time, but as they occur, you will need to refrain from scratching or touching the affected skin. You will need to avoid using harsh skincare products or wearing makeup in the region. You should also avoid direct or unprotected sun exposure and wear sun protection when leaving your home.

Your specialist will give you additional instructions when meeting with you in person. If any questions arise as you recover, we ask that you contact us.

Results

CO2 lasers offer gradual results, which means that you can watch your skin improve over time as your natural collagen levels continue to elevate. Your exact outcomes will vary depending on the concerns you treat, but once they fully develop, you can expect your skin to look and feel smoother, firmer, more even, elastic, and youthful.

The results provided by our CO2 laser can last for over a year once they have fully developed. To best preserve them, you will need to maintain an effective skincare routine and wear the proper sun protection when leaving the house.

Corresponding Procedures

Exion

If you are interested in rejuvenating your skin further, our team can combine your procedure with Exion! It is an advanced microneedling treatment that uses a device with fine needles to create uniform wounds on your skin’s surface to stimulate neocollagenesis. However, it achieves more astounding results by also emitting radiofrequency (RF) energy into these channels to gently contract and tighten the skin.

PRP Injections

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections use the components of your natural blood to rejuvenate your skin. This non-surgical treatment consists of our team taking a sample of your blood before processing it to separate out the PRP from the other cellular components before injecting it into regions of your face experiencing sun damage, wrinkles, sagging, and more.
