About Hair Thinning

Hair loss among women can create significant emotional impacts, such as lower self-esteem, poor body image, a perceived loss of femininity, and even a diminished social life.

For both men and women, hair thinning most commonly occurs in the form of androgenetic alopecia, or male/female-pattern hair loss. This is a hereditary condition that causes hair follicles to shrink, making hair thinner and stopping growth after menopause. Other factors contributing to hair loss include high levels of stress, genetics, hormonal shifts, nutritional deficiencies, or medical conditions. Fewer than 54% of women go through life with a full head of hair, and female-pattern hair loss is the most common cause of hair thinning and hair loss in women. (1) Often, women will begin to notice hair loss in the mid-frontal scalp region, and this becomes most visible where the hair parts in the midline. (1) When lifestyle changes are not effective for reducing hair loss, patients often consider professional advice.

Solutions For Hair Thinning

Keravive

Keravive is a treatment that removes impurities and surface buildup, infusing the scalp with enriching peptides and growth factors. Keravive helps address the root of hair loss by unclogging hair follicles and alleviating scalp flakiness, itchiness, or dryness that may lead to hair thinning. This treatment supplies the hair follicles with enriching peptides and growth factors that promote cell turnover in areas that need growth, helping cells multiply to support the proliferation of healthy hair follicles. This treatment is ideal for patients seeking a less invasive alternative for hair restoration.

Platelet-Rich Plasma Treatment

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy uses your own blood to accelerate healing, reduce shedding, stimulate hair follicles, and promote thicker and healthier hair. In treatment, Dr. Channell or another team member will draw a blood sample, similar to any other doctor’s appointment. After processing it into a concentrated plasma solution, they will inject it into a few areas of the scalp, flooding the area with vital growth factors. (2)

Viviscal Topical Treatments

Viviscal topical treatments are infused with Aminomar, a blend of marine-derived ingredients that help nourish thinning hair from within, promoting growth and reducing shedding. They are available as a thickening shampoo, a strengthening conditioner, and a thickening serum. The thickening shampoo is infused with collagen and seaweed extract to remove impurities and stimulate the scalp. The strengthening conditioner provides intense moisture for silky smooth hair, while the thickening serum controls frizz and helps strengthen the hair and add shine.

Hair Growth Supplements

Hair growth supplements can help you improve hair growth through anagen activation. You may take these supplements two to three times daily with food and water for about three to six months to see results. These supplements contain niacin, biotin, and iron to improve blood circulation to the hair follicles, nourish the body with essential nutrients, and improve oxygen levels, which is important for the growth of healthy hair.

Candidates for Hair Restoration

If you are a woman experiencing early-stage hair loss and want to restore density and volume, you may be an ideal candidate for non-surgical hair restoration treatments. Prospective patients must hold realistic expectations for their results, be in good general health, and be willing to commit to their treatments for an extended period. Dr. Channell will help you explore your treatment options and determine your candidacy during your consultation.

You may be in the earlier stages of hair loss, or your concerns may be more advanced. We encourage all patients to reach out if they are unsure whether they qualify for treatment.

Personal Consultation

During your personal consultation, Dr. Channell will evaluate your medical and lifestyle history, perform a thorough assessment of your scalp health, and discuss your options. She will examine your hair follicles and potentially analyze hormone levels through a blood test. With this information, Dr. Channell will create a customized treatment plan that addresses your hair concerns and lays a foundation for healthy, strong hair growth. She will also answer any questions or concerns you may have.

Preparation

Effectively preparing for your hair restoration treatment optimizes your results and the effects of these treatments. Depending on your selected treatments, the state of your hair loss, and your medical history, Dr. Channell may recommend that you:

  • Document the current state of your hair to track progress accurately.
  • Plan a consistent schedule for your treatment.
  • Reduce alcohol and caffeine intake and cease nicotine use before and during your treatment.

You may receive additional instructions, depending on your medical standing and hair goals. Following these closely ensures a safe, effective treatment process.

Procedure

Depending on the type of treatment you receive, your procedure will vary. Keravive and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy are in-office procedures.

During your Keravive procedure, Dr. Channell will use a vortex technology wand to remove buildup, dirt, and oils from your scalp and stimulate circulation. Once she has removed these impurities, she will apply a nourishing, moisturizing solution that is rich in growth factors and proteins. She will also provide a take-home, daily-use Keravive peptide complex spray to hydrate and nourish your scalp in between sessions.

To perform your platelet-rich plasma procedure, Dr. Channell will draw about 15-60 ml of blood from your arm. Shortly after, she will place it in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the red blood cells. Next, she will collect the platelets and place them into syringes to prepare them for injection. Dr. Channell will numb your scalp to minimize discomfort, then she will inject the PRP into specific thinning areas.

For other treatments, such as Viviscal topical treatments and hair growth supplements, she will provide a detailed regimen that optimizes hair growth.

Hair Restoration Results

The results from your PRP hair restoration treatment(s) will begin to show after 4 to 6 months, but it may take at least three sessions over 6 to 9 months to see significant improvements. As Keravive stimulates circulation and enhances moisture over 1 to 3 months, you will begin to notice new growth. Consistency is key for all treatments, especially with supplements and Viviscal products.

You will be able to style your hair as normal, but we recommend that you avoid tighter hairstyles to support hair growth and minimize damage.
