How Does Exion Improve Skin?
Microneedling utilizes tiny needles to puncture the skin at specific depths to induce damage to the skin in a controlled environment. The minimally invasive method is often performed on its own to improve the appearance of acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and photo damage. Exion combines RF, ultrasound and microneedling to allow for the energy to penetrate the skin at very specific depths. The incorporation of AI makes this even more controlled, leading to more even results and less pain.
The efficacy of RF microneedling and how it restructures and revitalizes the skin is well documented. Radiofrequency tightens the skin by applying internal thermal heat to the reticular dermis. This controlled damage encourages collagen production when the skin’s surface reaches 60 to 80℃. (1) When the skin reaches this temperature, it starts to form new collagen, blood vessels, and elastin fibers. RF treats the entire face as a whole, avoiding skin tone changes prompted by lasers or other more traditional treatment types. (1) Creating heat under the outermost layer of skin prompts the production of collagen, leading to widespread skin tightening and an overall glow for patients. Collagen continues production long after treatment, influencing results by keeping the skin looking youthful and radiant for extended periods.
Ultrasonic Technology
Exion Body and Face also use ultrasonic technology to increase the hyaluronic acid (HA) content in the skin. This directly increases moisture to reduce wrinkles and fine lines, add radiance, and help the skin appear youthful and rejuvenated. Balanced moisture content in the skin improves its overall appearance and greatly influences its texture. Ultrasonic energy penetrates its surface and directly targets the internal structures, improving the skin from within. (2)
Exion Treatments
Exion utilizes monopolar radiofrequency, meaning there is only one emitting pole that directly targets the skin. This device is frequently used to target specific skin conditions and pigmentation by affecting only certain portions of skin and leaving surrounding areas unaffected. Exion RF microneedling treatments target segments of skin by creating small islands of affected and unaffected areas. This allows for fast healing and even skin resurfacing. Dr. Guevara-Channell programs Exion’s AI system to very specific microneedling depths used to target certain skin conditions.
There are four main handpieces used with the Exion RF device. Each one focuses on a type of radiofrequency or an area of the body:
- Fractional RF: Microneedling and radiofrequency treatment used to stimulate collagen and elastin production in treated skin.
- Face and Body: RF and ultrasonic energy that instigates the production of HA, new collagen, and elastin fibers.
- Intimate Health: A special handpiece used to tighten the vaginal walls for patients who have given birth or are experiencing the effects of aging.
Depending on your treatment plan, Dr. Guevara-Channell chooses the right handpiece for your skin resurfacing needs. The beauty of Exion is its versatility and flexibility. With many options and handpieces, this single-pass RF microneedling device can be utilized on many areas of the body. She may use the Fractional RF handpiece to target acne scars or sun spots on the face, and the Body handpiece to tackle hard-to-treat stretch marks in the abdomen. Exion’s AI microneedling capabilities allow for deeper penetration when necessary, giving Dr. Guevara-Channell the freedom to customize treatments.

Personal Consultation with Dr. Guevara-Channell
During your consultation at Channell Wellness and Aesthetics, we will meet with you to discuss your medical history, current health, and what you want to achieve with Exion treatments. Dr. Guevara-Channell will take this time to examine your treatment area and determine the course of action that works best for you. She will also explain the details of the Exion device and its common uses to make sure you are prepared. This consultation will be the perfect chance to ask questions about the procedure and voice any concerns you may have about the Exion process. A member of our team will assist you in scheduling your Exion appointment with us.
Preparation
To best prepare for your treatment, please arrive at your appointment with a clean face free of makeup. If treatment is targeting somewhere other than the face, avoid applying lotions or harsh products that may irritate your skin before or after Exion. Avoid anti-inflammatory medications (aspirin, ibuprofen etc.) and tobacco/nicotine products leading up to your treatment. Dr. Guevara-Channell may request alterations to your current medications. Refrain from taking certain herbal supplements and substances that increase bleeding. Exion treatments are in-office and minimally invasive, so you may return to your daily activities right after your appointment.
Exion Procedure Steps
Dr. Guevara-Channell cleanses the treatment area before starting the treatment to make sure all makeup and debris are removed. If Exion Face or Body is chosen, then she applies a special gel to attract ultrasonic energy and protect the skin before treatment. In addition to the mechanical action of the microneedles, RF energy is delivered into the deeper layers of the skin through the needles. This heat energy helps to further stimulate collagen production and tighten the skin. Minimally painful and quick, this procedure typically takes 15 to 45 minutes depending on the targeted area.
Minimal Recovery for Impressive Results
After your session, you may experience mild redness and swelling that can last 1 to 2 days. Please avoid direct sunlight and heat during the first week of recovery, and always wear sun protection when in direct sunlight. Doing so will help retain your results and protect your skin from further sun damage.
Patients typically notice their full results between 4 and 6 weeks after their treatment. For best results, Dr. Guevara-Channell recommends receiving 2 to 5 Exion treatment sessions in the targeted areas. We schedule them at 2 to 4 week intervals to allow your skin to completely heal before instigating more controlled damage.
Corresponding & Complementary Procedures
Laser Treatments
Here at Channell Wellness and Aesthetics, we perform laser treatments for skin rejuvenation. Dr. Guevara-Channell first numbs your face with a topical anesthetic. Once that has taken effect, she cleanses the treatment area and gently passes the laser over the skin. There are multiple strength settings, depths, and types of laser skin rejuvenation treatments. If you are a good candidate for Exion, laser procedures may be a good alternative or addition to your health plan.
Photofacials
By using high-intensity pulsed light (IPL), photofacials treat specific skin concerns and pigmentation, balancing out skin tone and inducing collagen. This treatment uses multiple wavelengths of light to target certain skin imperfections without causing outward damage to the skin. Photofacials are non-ablative and stimulate cell regeneration deep below the skin’s surface. There is no associated downtime and results can be seen long after receiving this treatment.
